London’s first ever major balance bike event, the Strider British Balance Bike Championships, was hotly contested by 100 of the country’s top toddling riders over the newly constructed BMX track in Merton this weekend.

Open to anyone between 18 months to 5 years old, the top honours were awarded to Joel Robinson (aged 5), Silas Maxwell (aged 4), Ashton Heron (aged 3) and Joseph Katsantonis (aged 2) in their respective age-groups.

The event also saw 20 riders win qualifying spots for the Strider British Balance Bike Championship final later this year. This will see the top riders from five major qualifying event across the country face off against each other for the title of British champion and represent Great Britain at the 2013 World Championships in Florida.

Racing started with the smallest riders of the day. Cyrus Wint, aged just 2 years and 2 months, was the youngest competitor on the day and rode admirably, however it was Joseph Katsantonis who managed to fight off all of the competition and strode home first in all of his heat and finals – definitely one to look out for in the future.

Three year old Ashton Heron, the 2012 British Champion and one of the more experienced Strider British Balance Bike riders – fought off strong competition to come home once again in first position in his age group – reaffirming his intentions to retain his title in 2013.

Adrian, Ashton’s dad, said: “It was an incredible day in London with a superb track, great racing and huge smiles from all of the riders whether they won or lost. Ashton is already talking about the next event – he absolutely loves it!”

The biggest field of the day was battled out in the 4 year old category with 45 riders competing for trophies and the five sought after invitations to the Strider British Balance Bike Championship finals. It was the hotly contested age-group and did not disappoint with drama all the way resulting in Silas Maxwell striding over the line in first place.

With the way he managed to see off his fellow competitors, including his twin brother Sebastian, he’s also one to look out for at the finals in September.

Finally, the eldest riders finished the day in style taking on the tricky undulating tack with ease resulting in Joel Robinson narrowly pipped Andras Crossdale to the line in the final race of the day.

Melanie Thomas, Strider British Balance Bike Championship organiser said: “The quality of the racing was amazing and the kids loved the chance to race at such a big event. As the first event in the Strider British Balance Bike Championships, we hope that it will grow from here and see many more rides be part of the series and be inspired to get onto two wheels.”

There are four more qualifying events at the 2013 Strider British Balance Bike Championships that will see riders compete in Gosport (June 16th), Gravesend (July 21st), Birmingham (August 21st) and finish in Manchester at the home of British Cycling (September 22nd).

Experts agree that it is counterproductive to teach a young child to rely on stabilisers when they first make the move to a two-wheeler. It really doesn’t give them the chance to learn how to properly balance. To find out more about the Strider Cup balance bike series visit www.stridercup.org.

Pedaless balance bikes teach balance, coordination, and confidence that all develop naturally when children experience group play and friendly competition on Striders.

The Strider British Balance Bike Championships has taken on an international field as a top Danish rider signs up to challenge the Brits at the first qualifying event in Merton, London, next month.

As there are no balance bike races in his native Denmark, Louis Kamradt (2 years-old), from Copenhagen is now training for the biggest ride of his life before flying over for event.

He will be joining hundreds of other riders vying for the sought-after qualifying spots for the British championship finals later in the year at the home of British Cycling. The overall championship winner will then win the chance to represent Great Britain in the Strider World Championships in Florida – the highest honour in balance bike riding on the planet.

“We have not been able to find any challenges for him in Denmark and is therefore traveling to London in May for him to participate and have fun at the Strider race. He is also son of a previous BMX champ and Danish Champion in Downhill, so racing is in his blood!” Said Louis’s mum, Emilie Kamradt.

The 2013 Strider British Balance Bike Championships will have five major qualifying events that will kick off in London on Sunday May 5th at the Merton BMX track. The championships will then visit Gosport (June 16th), Gravesend (July 21st), Birmingham (August 21st) and finish in Manchester at the home of British Cycling (September 22nd).

With places still open for riders to join the opening event on the 5th May in Merton, organisers are urging interested families to register before the event fills. Melanie Thomas, STRIDER British Balance Bike Championship organiser comments: “The events are open to anyone, no matter their ability, with opportunities to train and ride at organised coaching sessions before the big day. They are designed to be exciting, yet safe, environments for children to explore and play on two wheels, with the added excitement of racing.”

The series of events created by Strider, leaders in no-pedal balance bike technology, are part of a wider campaign to encourage tens-of-thousands of toddlers to take to two wheels with training centres and adventure zone play areas also planned throughout the year. Melanie continues: “Research has proven that balance bikes significantly improve balance and coordination which means that even our youngest riders can have a go.”

Roll over Wiggo − thousands of pint sized riders between 18 months and 5 years-old are set to ride in the first ever STRIDER British Balance Bike Championship series for toddlers later this year.

With the growth of interest in balance bike riding and racing in the UK last year, Strider™, the world leader in balance bike technology, has worked with world class BMX and cycling venues across the UK to create the first British championship series for no-pedal balance bike riders.

The 2013 Strider British Balance Bike Championships will have five major qualifying events that will commence in London on Sunday May 5th at the Merton BMX track. The championships will then visit Gosport (June 16th), Gravesend (July 21st), Birmingham (August 21st) and finish in Manchester at the home of British Cycling (September 22nd).

At each qualifying event, finalists will win the chance to enter the invitation-only finals, also held in Manchester in September, to ride for the chance to be crowned the British Champion and represent Great Britain at the Strider World Championships in Florida later in the year.

“The Strider British Balance Bike Championships are a great opportunity for riders younger than ever before to get on two wheels and experience riding at some of the UK’s biggest and best venues,” said Sam Foakes, manager of the National Cycling Centre BMX track. “Not only will this help build confidence and coordination but will also inspire a generation of children to get on a bike and have a go.”

Alison Oliver, Managing Director of the Youth Sport Trust, who is in support of the Strider British Balance Bike Championships said: “The Youth Sport Trust believes passionately that sport changes lives and we work tirelessly to encourage greater opportunities for young people to take part in PE and school sport. We believe that young people should be introduced to an active lifestyle from a young age which is why it is encouraging to see the work of the Strider British Balance Bike Championships.”

Melanie Thomas, organiser of the Strider British Balance Bike Championships, said: “Not only are we growing the number and capacity for the Strider balance bike races this year, but the new format of the series has meant that the riders who ride in qualifying events and do well, will also ride in the finals and get the chance to win the UK’s first ever balance bike series.”

The series of events created by Strider, leaders in no-pedal balance bike technology, are part of a wider campaign to encourage tens-of-thousands of toddlers to take to two wheels with training centres and adventure zone play areas also planned throughout the year.

Melanie continues: “Research has proven that balance bikes significantly improve balance and coordination which means that even our youngest riders can have a go. They are designed to be exciting, yet safe, environments for children to explore and play on two wheels, with the added excitement of racing.”

With registration now open for each of the championship events, we would encourage interested parents to visit www.stridercup.org for more information and to book a place to avoid disappointment.

300 toddlers, aged just 18 months to 5 years-old, raced no-pedal balance bikes at the Strider UK World Cup this Sunday, in the biggest ever UK celebration of balance bike riding and racing at the National Cycling Centre, the home of British Cycling, in Manchester.

The event, which was the second biggest event globally, saw the British balance bike champion Ashton Heron (3 years) retain his title; and saw 2 year-old Jack Wall and 5 year-old Tosin Adegbehingbe take the honours in their respective age-group finals.

Adrian, Ashton’s dad, said: “It was an incredible day of racing in a stunning venue – all of the kids just loved it! There really is nothing else like this type of event around for toddlers and young children in the UK. It’s these type of events that will really leave a legacy to the Olympics this year.”

2012 saw the first ever organised series of toddler balance bike events with thousands of children taking up the chance to ride and race at events across the country.

The event this Sunday, which is the last event of the 2012 season, saw some of the most exciting and closely fought Strider Cup racing of the year, Melanie Thomas, Organiser of the Strider UK World Cup event, summed up the day by saying: “It was a great day from start to finish with the final race of the day being decided by a matter of inches!”

“Even though this is the first ever year that strider racing has been held in the UK, we have amassed a very loyal and rapidly growing following of riders and families who have loved the chance to race at events all over the country. Not only are we planning to continue the Strider Cup series in 2013 – but we’re hoping to make it bigger and better than ever giving access to children to ride and race at events all over the country – no matter what their ability!”

The toddling racers at the Strider UK World Cup on Sunday flew over the bumps and around burns of the same world class BMX track that the British national team train on. Shanze Reade, one of our top British BMX riders said: “It’s events like the Strider UK World Cup in Manchester that not only give our youngest riders the chance to get on a bike and have a go, but even race against their friends on the same track that I train on. It’s an amazing opportunity.”

With the aim of giving toddlers and young children across the country regular access to riding and racing balance bikes, the team at Strider has set up Centres-of-Excellence across the country with many more in the pipeline. To find the nearest centre to you visit http://stridercup.org/strider-centres-of-excellence/

Experts agree that it is counterproductive to teach a young child to rely on stabilisers when they first make the move to a two-wheeler. It really doesn’t give them the chance to learn how to properly balance.

Balance bikes teach balance, coordination, and confidence that all develop naturally when children experience group play and friendly competition on Striders. For more information, visit www.stridercup.org

Following a series of national news articles, the 2012 Strider UK World Cup in Manchester was filled with over 300 eager toddlers itching to get on their bikes to ride and race over the stunning National Cycling Centre BMX track this November.

Following on from the success of the first Strider UK World Cup in June, this second Strider UK World Cup balance bike race is set to be bigger and better than ever before with three separate tracks planned for the day of racing.

The 2012 Strider Cup series, which is backed by Britain’s top BMX rider Shanaze Reade, has seen thousands of children jump on their balance bikes to race against friends across the country. Shanaze said: “It’s events like the Strider UK World Cup in Manchester that not only give our youngest riders the chance to get on a bike and have a go, but even race against their friends on the same track that I train on. It’s an amazing opportunity.”

The event, which is due to be held on Sunday November 18th, was brought forward as a result of an influx of enquiries from children and their parents about returning to the venue with a major event.

Mae Robinson (aged 5) who raced at the first Strider World Cup event, said: “It was brilliant – I can’t wait to race my balance bike over the bumps again!”

Eileen Robinson, Mae’s mum, added: “There really is nothing else like it out there for this age of child. All of the kids had such a great time at the last event flying over the bumps and racing against their friends – it was simply an amazing day and I can’t wait to take May back again!”

Organised by Strider, the world leaders in balance bike technology, the event is designed to inspire the next generation of British cyclists to get out and explore the world on two wheels in an exciting, fun and safe environment.

Nicola O’Neill from the National Cycling Centre said: “We’re proud to not only be a centre-of-excellence for Strider riders in the UK with our Strider coaching sessions but to also to host amazing events like the Strider UK World Cup. The whole team can’t stop talking about the little riders – it’s created a huge vibe around the venue.”

Yawar Abbas, Principal Events Manager at Manchester City Council, said: “The Strider UK World Cup really is the only event of its kind in the region. It is a great way to get toddlers out and active whilst giving them the chance to mingle with the world’s best riders at the state-of-the-art facilities at the National Cycling Centre.”

There will be a nominal £3 charge for riders at the event and £2 for spectators’ payable on the day at the event.

Melanie Thomas, Director of Melrose Kids Ltd (the official UK distributor for Strider) said: “We’ve been amazed by the overwhelming support for the Strider Cup series in the UK and have seen it go from strength-to-strength over the past 6 months. The second event in Manchester will not only give riders a bigger and better experience than before, but will also see riders return to defend their titles. It’s set to be another great day of racing.”
